NOVEMBER IN ROUND ROCK
1847: Among the families arriving along Brushy
Creek from Vermillion County, Illinois, is the family of William Knight
Makemson (age 11). W. K. would become lawyer, county sheriff, Republican
nominee for Lt. Governor in 1892 and Governor in 1894, and the first
president of the Old Settlers Association.
1856: In Williamson County’s third U. S.
Presidential election, the ballots from Round Rock are in favor of Millard
Fillmore, former President and nominee of the Know-Nothing (or American)
Party. Overall, the county, state and nation elect James Buchanan the 15th
President.
1883: Telephone lines link Round Rock with
Taylor .
1891: Professor Coleman is appointed
President at Round Rock Institute.
1902: The Ladies Self-Culture Club is active
in town.
1904: In a roping contest at Round Rock Sam
Craig won first money in 32 seconds and Frank Brown second money in 38
seconds. Also, the Round Rock Creamery fails after a short operation.
1925: The high point of the Dragons' season
is a 6-6 tie with Georgetown, a larger school that Round Rock had never even
scored on before.
1930: The Round Rock Cemetery Association is
formed with R. L. McDonald as president.
1938: In front of 3,000 fans (twice the
population of the town!) Round Rock defeats Georgetown for the first time
ever, a 12-6 victory.
