Archeology Day at the new Berry Springs Park

check out the neat videos

Atlatl - A throwing device usually consisting of a stick fitted with a thong or socket to steady the butt of a spear or dart and extend the length it travels. The atlatl is a tool that was used by prehistoric hunters to lengthen the arm, adding a greater mechanical advantage than throwing a spear with one's bare hands, which makes the darts able to fly much faster and with much more force. Archeological evidence suggests that the altatl has been in use for at least 15,000 years.

Special thanks to Dr. C. Andrew Hemmings, for giving us the the atlatl demonstration.

THE STORK TRAVELS THE CHISHOLM TRAIL
click for story

There lives at this good day in the city of Waco, a frail little lady, that has passed her four score and ten years and four months, to whom belongs the honor of being the first white woman that went “up the old Chisholm Trail.”  In 1871, Geo. W. Cluck collected a herd of a thousand steers to take to Abilene, Kansas.  Capt. D. H. Snyder of the same county had a similar herd and these two herds traveled near each other for protection and mutual help.
